A work has to hold still on paper before we release it. If the image weakens at the edge, in a small size, or in a quiet room, it stays out.

How a print is made

From first notice to finished print

The catalog begins with things that keep returning: plant forms, house shapes, fragments of color, rooms remembered a little wrong. Some become abstract works. Some stay close to what was seen.

Notice what remains

We begin with a mark, a shape, a place, or a small visual accident that keeps asking to be looked at again.

REDUCE

Remove the loose parts

The image is cut back until the subject can stand without explanation. Empty space is treated as part of the work.

STEP 03

PROOF

Test it on paper

Color, scale, margin, and paper surface are checked in print. The screen is not trusted for the final decision.
